It’s a Man’s World… But Does It Have to Be?

Picture this: The village gathers for an important meeting. The men sit in a circle, deep in discussion. The women? They’re busy preparing tea, quietly listening from a distance. Later, when they return home, they ask their husbands, “So, what was decided?”

And just like that, policies are made, rules are set, and decisions are final—without a single woman’s voice in the room.

It’s been this way for generations. If a woman wants to be heard, she must speak through her husband. And if she doesn’t have one? Well, better luck next time.

The same goes for youth. They might have their own little pocket gaatherings, but when it comes to village decisions, their voices carry as much weight as a leaf in the wind.

It’s the elders’ way, the men’s way, the "that’s just how it is" way.

And so, we continue. Men lead, women support. It’s the way of the land, the way of the church, the way we’ve always done things.

But is it the way we should keep doing things?

Here’s a thought—what if we asked for a place in the meeting house? What if we challenged the idea that only men make decisions? What if we stopped waiting to be spoken for and simply spoke up?

Culture evolves. Religion inspires. But equality? That has to be fought for.

The truth is, when women and youth are seen and heard in our communities, it stops being a novelty and starts being normal. And when it becomes normal, suddenly, a woman leading a government, a youth shaping policy—it’s no longer unthinkable.

It all starts with a seat at the table. So, are we pulling up a chair, or are we waiting to be invited?
