Taiwan Technical Assistance: Where’s the Real Impact?

For years, Fiji has benefited from Taiwan’s technical assistance in agriculture, fisheries, healthcare, education, and renewable energy.

Workshops are held, training programs are completed, and experts are sent in to teach new skills. But here’s the real question—when do we start seeing tangible results in our communities?

Technical assistance is meant to create self-sufficiency, but if we’re still heavily reliant on external expertise after decades, something isn’t working. Are these programs designed for long-term sustainability or just short-term knowledge transfer? Are we empowering local talent and businesses to continue the work after the experts leave?

Take agriculture, for example. Taiwan has introduced advanced farming techniques, but why are we still importing so much food? If these techniques were fully integrated, our farmers should be leading the market by now. The same goes for fisheries—Taiwan has shared expertise on aquaculture, yet many Fijians still struggle to turn fishing into a profitable industry.

It’s time to evaluate how we use technical assistance. Are we applying what we learn? Are we ensuring that trained individuals stay in their fields? Are we investing in local production instead of depending on imported solutions?

Technical assistance should be a stepping stone to self-reliance, not a permanent crutch. I would like to see this technical assistance shared with our remote maritime communities, i want to see agri and aqua culturing programs that lead to real economic empowerment, thriving local industries, and stronger communities. If the impact isn’t felt on the ground, then what’s the point?
